Friedrichs Biografie
Friedrich’s biography is multi-faceted. He prudently steered his Electorate through the turbulent period of transition to the early modern era. Nowadays, he is remembered primarily for his role as protector of Martin Luther. In matters of mining and the minting of coinage, which formed the basis of his economic power, he tactfully collaborated with his Albertine relatives, Dukes Albrecht and Georg. However, he also gained a reputation as a patron of science, education, and art, for example by founding the University of Wittenberg and by appointing Lucas Cranach the Elder as court painter.

Friedrichs Vorliebe
Friedrich’s fondness for aphorisms and proverbs is reflected in the title of the exhibition: for he owed his financial, and hence political, independence not to glittering gold, but rather to the rich silver deposits of Saxony.
